When you are just starting as a budding DJ newbie and are getting the necessary music and equipment put together, you may come across the idea that you need to place your DJ speakers on stands. So you are wondering if DIY speakers stands are a good idea or whether you should buy DJ speaker stands.

The speaker stands should help the speaker project and carry the sound
This is the first and the most important requirement. The sound projection depends on two factors: Sound absorption, and clear sound path. To enable a clear path for the sound, the speaker audio stands must help project the sound over and above the audience. At the same time, the sound should not be directed into the audience, to reduce sound absorption.
Bottom line, the DJ stands need to be adjustable height and their best height is at the ear level or slightly higher. Depending on the venue and whether the audience is sitting, standing, or both, you need to make your stands adjustable anywhere between 4' and 6' in height.
The audio stand should prevent the sound distortion and loss
The best way to prevent sound distortion is to have a strong and narrow tie-in of your stand into the speaker. Most DJ speakers have standard 1 3/8" sockets, and some have 1 1/2" sockets. Be sure to tighten the screw to prevent any rattling or other sound distortions. The sound loss is minimized by using the smallest possible connection between the speaker and the speaker sound. So if your speaker weight allows it, go with the smallest possible standard socket size.
The DJ audio stand should be sturdy and portable
This is where the material used comes to play a big role in building DJ audio stands or PA speaker stands. If you thought you can get away with a wood speaker stands construction, think again. With wood, you will never be able to achieve the low weight-high impact resistance that an aluminum or steel speaker stand offers. But with either an aluminum or stainless steel construction you can create a sturdy yet lightweight stand that is easily transported in a car or van.
Bottom line, are you a handy man enough to make your own stands?
